Redlands

The Redland is a rural enclave on Miami’s southern outskirts, named for pockets of red clay once common in the area. Located about 20 miles southwest of Downtown Miami, and chock full of rustic charm, it may be one of Miami-Dade’s best kept secrets. With its tropical climate, driving through the Redland you’ll see fruits and vegetables in the fields, ornamental plant and palm tree farms and family-owned businesses, such as koi farmers, banana growers and herb farmers. Peacocks live abundantly and freely within the many groves; Redland has been designated a Wild Bird Sanctuary. Many farms, original clapboard homes of early settlers, u-pick'em fields and coral rock walls dot the landscape. Redland is the region surrounding the main entrance to Everglades National Park, so it’s easy to combine a stop in the Redland with a visit to the park, or to the Florida Keys, which are just a half hour south on US 1. Popular attractions include Knaus Berry Farm storefront farm stand (famous for their cinnamon rolls), which opens for the season in late October; Cauley Square Historic Railroad Village in nearby Goulds; Miami-Dade’s first commercial winery, Schnebly Redland’s Winery and Brewery; and Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead.
